This
ovoid vase, or meiping, is typical of the practical everyday wares
manufactured in the Cizhou area of north China during the Northern
Song dynasty (960-1126). Its innovative decoration probably derived
from the works crafted by silver and goldsmiths of the Tang dynasty
(618-907). Prior to glazing, floral scrolls and a band of coins
were incised into the slip and the background stamped with circles.
