The
fiery colors and fierce roaring appearance of this massive lion
indicate that he was one of the protectors of the temple, whose
job it was to frighten away evildoers. He would have been donated
as a Buddhist act of merit to a Thai temple. Rather primitive
in form and made in several parts, he shows a vigor and dynamism
typical of Northern Thai sculpture. A lidded slot in his back
was possibly used to hold a manuscript.
