Storage Jar

Storage Jar
Vietnam, Ly or Tran dynasty, 1000s-1200s
glazed stoneware, 8 1/2 inches (21.5 cm) high

Charles Bayly Jr. Collection by exchange
1954.40

Inspired by Chinese ceramics of the Song dynasty (960-1279), this storage jar is similar to those found in the northern Vietnamese province of Thanh Hoa. Its ivory-colored glaze is stained brown through burial. The jar has six strap handles around its shoulder, an embellishment characteristic of higher quality ceramics of the period.
